this is how i prefer to remember her, after watching what they turned her into in that godawful film grease with a fag in her mouth it kinda put me right off!!
Yes, there is an Ohio river. No, it isn’t where she’s from, it is in the US, in Ohio. This is an old traditional ballad from the US that probably goes back to the 1800’s, and is similar to another song of the same period, “Pretty Polly”. It has been recorded many, many times over the last 80 years, but this version is sung beautifully.
Fair comment – Grease was a lousy film. All the “teenagers” looked about thirty. Could never understand its success. Don’t know why your comment has been negged.
cheers for the support easybeat, its the way of youtube the anoraks that negged it know no better,it just seems sad that after that awful film her career nosedived,i seem to remember she had a health scare some years after it,still i’ll remember her music in a much happier mode pre grease.
I thought of this song because of an arrest made in the case of Annie Le. But the way she sings it is cheerful and professional, displaying none of the drama or emotion that is contained in the words and story of the song. It makes me wonder.
I love this song. I first heard it performed by Garrison Keilor (though with the genders inverted). It’s so haunting. It sounds like a standard love ballad, but the murder adds a bizarre twist.
Je trouve qu’elle se montre tres charmante quand elle chante cette belle chanson. Elle etait cute!!!!!!!

It’s funny, I feel exactly the same – reminds me of all the great friends I made when I lived in America in the mid 80’s and mid 90’s!
